ezSAM Vault

Introduction The Vault module of ezSAM provides an easy and cost effective data protection, business continuity and disaster recovery solution for home users, SOHO and SMB by utilizing low cost USB-Hard Disk, unused disk space from different machines and almost free remote email storage from web email providers like Hotmail, Yahoo, Google or your own ISP.

In enterprise environment, where total amount of data to be protected is potentially very large, an add-on component ezSAM Archiver could be deployed strategically to satisfy the disaster recovery objectives. Instead of saving the vaulted entries in a remote web email service, the vaulted entries are saved in-house in the ezSAM Archiver. Read more about ezSAM Archiver...

The Vault module is free for personal use on a single computer for aiding in the best possible protection of your personal use data.

Required Steps:

Vaulting provides for securely storing your valuable information away from your computer(s) on a regular basis so that in case of any mishap with your computer(s), you will still have your valuable information available.

Steps to be performed once for the entire system after installing ezSAM Vault:

In general terms, you will need to perform the following steps for one time after starting ezSAM for the first time.

  1. Decide whether you will use remote web email location and a removable storage device (e.g., USB-HD, CD/DVD) or unused disk space in another machine for vaulting of your valuable information. You can decide to vault your information only locally or both remotely and locally. You also need to specify a location for saving the vaulted data and a location for saving baseline data locally.
  2. In case you have decided to vault information remotely, you need to specify which remote location(s) (i.e., web email services) you will use to remotely vault your information.
  3. The information is transferred to the remote location(s) using email service provided by your Internet service provider. You need to specify the email account information provided by your ISP so that the ezSAM Vault software can connect to the email service of your ISP.
  4. Most email service does not encrypt the data they transfer and your data is going to be saved in a remote location. You do not want to have your valuable data visible to others in any manner. So define a long password and note it down in some safe place. All your information will be encrypted first with this long password before the data leave your system. Even when the data is vaulted only locally, the data is encrypted so that nobody else can view your data from the local vault.
  5. Specify what type of information is valuable and worth saving in remote or local vault (e.g., you may decide not to vault the audio/video files that could be downloaded from the web again in case of a computer mishap).

Steps to be performed once for each folder/file share to setup vaulting for information in it:

In Windows environment, the "Documents and Settings" directory gets used by many applications as a default place to stored new files. This directory is added to the list of managed directory under ezSAM by default. You may have other folders under which files are organized and they are to be vaulted. For each such folder, following steps are to be done.

  1. Add the folder to ezSAM for managing it independently even in the case where the parent directory of the folder is present in the ezSAM list. (As a note, if the parent directory of a folder is set up for vaulting, then no subdirectory under that parent folder should be setup for vaulting. This will unnecessary vault same information multiple times.)
  2. Baseline the content of the folder so that a reference time is established. Changes to the content of the folder will be tracked starting from this reference time. In case the folder contains large amount of data, the baseline data is saved only in the local baseline location that is defined in step 1.

Steps to be performed as needed for actually vaulting your changed  information:

  1. One-click Vaulting operation - Simply select the folder/file share that needs to be vaulted click the menu option "Vault Changes Now". You can also vault the changes in all folders/file shares with a single click by selecting the menu option "Vault All Enabled Shares".

The system can also perform vaulting based on a schedule, but this functionality is only available in the enterprise environment. In SOHO and SMB environment, it is not possible to assure that a computer is up and running at the time of set schedule. To keep the operational process of vaulting simple for home users, SOHO and SMB, the vaulting is done on-demand with a single click.
